Out in the cold

I am a lifelong Democrat. I started this election season with one thought…anyone but Hillary. I just figured that the Republicans had made such a mess of our country that winning should be easy if we nominated anyone but Hillary. She was the one candidate that would energize Republicans, she had way too much baggage, and I really didn’t think the country needed a Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton scenario.

My choice was Richardson, but obviously, not many people agreed with me. Then it started to become clear that the Democratic braintrust (and I use that term very loosely) had decided on the most inexperienced candidate in the race. The harder they pushed Obama, the more I liked Hillary. Being a woman, I took real exception that the DNC and all Dems would cry racism about everything said about their hand-picked candidate but they sat silently by as sexism against Clinton ran rampant. I never considered myself a feminist, but I found myself becoming quite militant about it. To the point that there was not a snowball’s chance in hell that I would ever vote for Obama. Call it being stupid to consider voting for McCain because I felt that my party had no problem allowing a female to get trashed but not a minority, or call it cutting of my nose to spite my face. But I faced an anger I didn’t even know I had. It sure brought up memories of being treated less than equal because the extra inches on my body stuck out of my chest instead of hanging between my legs. Memories of being paid less because I was not the “bread winner” for my family, of being the only one at the meeting being asked to get coffee for everyone (again because I was the only one without those few inches hanging between my legs), of being the only one asked if I had any plans for more children in the future before a big project. Yeah, I had some anger.

So, I plotted my revenge to the good ol boys by planning to vote for McCain, secure in the knowledge that Roe v. Wade would be secure because of a Democratically-held Congress. The more other Dems tried to threaten me with R v W, the more determined I was to vote McCain. How dare my own party continue to treat me less than equal, foolishly thinking because I am a woman I would buckle to their scare tactics, like I am too stupid to know R v W would be safe, like that is the only issue I care about because I have a vagina. Yep, I was voting for McCain, come hell or high water. When he named Palin as his running mate, I laughed with glee at the possibility that it would be the Republicans that shattered the glass ceiling. After all of the lip service given by the Democrats for all these years of equality, what sweet revenge after finding out that my party only believes in equality if you have a penis.

Then I had a long conversation with a Republican friend of mine. Well, more of a scream-fest with a Republican friend of mine and all the things I hate about Republicans came rushing back. Things like how they use the term “personal responsibility” as a cover for being the most self-absorbed, selfish, hating people I have ever met. My god, what was I thinking to believe I could ever side with these people who have such little regard for their fellow man? These people who only care about themselves? And I had actually planned to vote for one of them!

So I resolved to hold my nose and vote for Obama, even fearing for the safety of our country because of it. I truly believe he is too inexperienced to lead because of his willingness to talk to ANY world leader. He should study up on where that got Kennedy with Khrushchev. Anyway, I was pulling that lever because I hate the selfishness of Republicans.

And then the sexism raised its ugly head again. I have been completely sickened by the liberal’s response to Palin. Going so far as to claim her youngest child was her daughter’s and not hers. Have you people no shame? There I was hating on Republicans for being selfish and here comes MY Party being so selfish that they would trash a 17 year old for politics? Isn’t this the same Party that has spent the entire campaign crying that it should be about the issues whenever something negative has come up about their hand-picked nominee?

I don’t know why I am surprised. My Party, the supposed “big tent” party, sat by and let one woman get completely trashed and never said a word, why would it surprise me that they would not only say nothing, they actively and willingly push the trashing of 2 more women?

So now I am on an island alone. My choices are a Party that is selfish, hate-filled and contemptuous, and a Party that is hypocritical, hate-filled and contemptuous. You know what, screw both of you. I give up. The whole damned bunch of you make me want to vomit. I guess I will throw away my vote by writing in Susan B Anthony. At least I won’t feel slimely and dirty afterwards.

  1. maryK Said,

You may want to consider the fact that Republicans make less than Libs, but they actually give more to charity. Check our Cindy McCain’s charitable activities. You’ll be blown away by what she does. Obamas gave nothing to charity. There are statistics out there that should be available about charitable givings. It was eye opening - coming from former Dem.

Here is the article” “Charity’s Political Divide”
Republicans give a bigger share of their incomes to charity, says a prominent economist. http://philanthropy.com/free/articles/v19/i04/04001101.htm

  4. maryK Said,

I realized that Dem talk the sweet talk, don’t walk the walk. Rep talk rough, but they actually walk the walk. And McCain is really gutsy to choose Palin. Real men are not afraid of powerful women.

    Get a grip honey….
“Personal responsibility” means EXACTLY what it says….Conservatives highly embrace this virtue … don’t judge us by how your friends act or the left wing blogs….
